General Letter to State Representatives

Dear ______________________________________,

I urge you to give (bill number) a favorable report out of committee.

This bill (insert sentence or two summarizing the proposed legislation) allows for a party to voluntarily seek a genetic test to determine parentage from an accredited laboratory for a civil or criminal proceeding before a court issues an order requiring the genetic test.

There are 3 primary victims in cases of paternity fraud: the child, the biological father and the male falsely identified by the mother to be the child’s father. For less than a $100 paternity test, we can know with certainty whether a particular man is or is not the father of a particular child.

Paternity fraud is a violation of a child’s right to know his/her own identity and the identity of his/her father. The child has a right to have a relationship with his/her biological father and mother. Additionally, the proper identification of a child is important for genetic and medical reasons, as well as, inheritance and medical insurance coverage.

(Bill number) allows for individuals in which the question of parentage arises to secure genetic testing results from an accredited laboratory sooner rather than later.

Please support (bill number).

Sincerely,
